An OCT scan interpreted as decorative visual art
This art print is inspired by the visual language of optical coherence tomography scans, translated into a composed artwork intended for professional eye-care environments. I created this piece to reflect the layered structure and rhythm familiar to OCT imaging while removing clinical function, measurements, or diagnostic markers. The result is an artwork that feels relevant to modern eye care while remaining purely decorative in purpose.
OCT scans are an integral part of contemporary ophthalmology and optometry, particularly in retinal and macular care. They are usually encountered on screens, associated with evaluation and decision-making. With this print, my goal was to allow that visual language to exist in a calmer, non-clinical context. By focusing on form, contrast, and composition, the artwork can live comfortably on the wall rather than functioning as data.
As an artist working with eye-related subject matter, I’m attentive to how technical imagery behaves when removed from its original purpose. In shared professional spaces, literal clinical visuals can increase tension or distraction. This OCT scan art print avoids that by abstracting recognizable elements into a balanced, interpretive image that supports the environment rather than demanding attention.
This is a physical art print that ships. It is created for decor and visual enrichment only. It is not a medical image, diagnostic reference, or educational tool. There are no labels, indicators, or instructions embedded in the artwork. Its role is to contribute to the atmosphere of a space through subject familiarity and visual restraint.
In patient-facing areas, this distinction matters. While OCT scans are routine in care, displaying literal scan imagery can sometimes heighten concern. This artwork presents the essence of OCT structure without its clinical weight. Patients may see an abstract, layered composition, while professionals recognize the quiet reference to imaging technology central to their work.
Where this OCT scan art print is commonly used
- Retina and imaging clinics
- Exam rooms with limited wall content
- Consultation rooms used for discussion
- Offices and staff areas within eye-care practices
In these settings, the artwork functions as background enrichment. It does not compete with screens, equipment, or signage, and it does not invite explanation.
Why OCT-inspired art works in eye-care decor
- OCT imaging is central to modern eye care
- Layered forms echo retinal structure without data
- Decorative interpretation reduces clinical intensity
- Subject relevance remains subtle and professional
This print is also sometimes selected as a professional gift within retina and imaging teams. Because it contains no text or explicit clinical markers, it can be appreciated broadly while remaining clearly connected to the field.
Throughout the creation of this piece, my focus was translation rather than representation. The OCT scan is present as a visual reference, but it is allowed to exist as art rather than information. Over time, the print becomes part of the room’s visual identity, quietly reinforcing the connection between the environment and the work done there.
The OCT scan art print aligns with eye care through subject matter while remaining purely decorative in intent. It exists to enrich professional spaces visually, not to instruct, diagnose, or explain.

These artworks were hand-drawn using a digital painting tablet, then “watercolor” effects were added. Each print is hand-signed by ophthalmic artist, Mark Erickson. These make great gifts for eye doctors.
